This is the image for the news article titled  GEAR UP to High School Summer Bridge Program The Division of Student Support Services & Federal Programs’ Counseling Department has been actively involved in collaborative planning with GEAR UP Clayton and Clayton State University in preparation for the GEAR UP to High School Summer Bridge Program.

The program will begin with the SEEDS Training at Clayton State University on June 18th – 20th targeting 100 at risk students using the criteria stated below. For over 25 years, the SEEDS Training Program has worked with schools, companies, and non-profits to craft experiential training programs for youth. The SEEDS Training is a powerful learning experience taught through the use of methodologies such as brain-based learning (developing learning capacity), social and emotional learning (building empathy and emotional intelligence), and experiential learning (game-based simulations for learning).

The final portion of the GEAR UP to High School Summer Bridge Program will be held from July 24- July 30, 2018 and will serve approximately 1080 rising 9th grade students in a week long program designed to provide students with interactive hands-on learning experiences in math, science, ELA, and social studies. Additionally, students will participate in Emotional Readiness & Social Emotional Learning Workshops designed to reinforce the skills necessary to be successful during the transition to high school in the fall.

The following criteria are being utilized to select students:

  • 7th Grade GMAS Score Range below 750L (for current 8th grade students)
  • 5 or more out-of-school suspension days
  • 5 or more in-school suspension days
  • 10 or more excused and unexcused absences from school
  • Over age and below grade level

GEAR UP to High School will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 2:30 p.m. Students will be served breakfast and lunch daily and transportation will be provided. Summer Bridge Program locations are as follows:

  • Drew High School
  • Forest Park High School
  • Jonesboro High School
  • Morrow High School
  • Mundy’s Mill High School
  • North Clayton High School
  • Riverdale High School

Lovejoy and Mt. Zion High Schools will not be in utilized for the program because of HVAC repairs. As such, Lovejoy High School rising 9th grade students will attend Mundy’s Mill High School and Mt. Zion High School students will attend Jonesboro High School.
