Clayton County BOE schedules action on FY2018 millage rate

Approval will maintain the district’s present millage rate

JONESBORO - The final step in the budgeting process for the coming fiscal year has been scheduled.

In accordance with Georgia law, the Clayton County Board of Education will host three public hearings to allow citizens an opportunity to express opinions on the district’s proposed millage rate for the FY2018 Budget. While the total millage rate is recommended to remain flat, the proposed rate is considered an increase in property taxes due to the tax digest information supplied by the Clayton County Tax Commissioner.

As a result, in support of the FY18 adopted budget which includes class size reduction and additional support to schools, the Clayton County Board of Education announces its intention to increase the 2018 property taxes that it will levy by 2.19 percent over the rollback millage rate. This action is required to maintain the present millage rate of 19.095 mills which was used to establish the 2018 Budget to support the Clayton County Public School system.

“The Board of Education, in approving the FY2018 budget, has not increased the millage rate,” said Dr. Pam Adamson, Chairman of the Clayton County Board of Education, “County residents should note that this increase in taxes is due to an increase in property values based on the county’s tax digest and does not result from any action by this Board.”

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia Law requires that a rollback millage rate be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s new digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessment occurred.

The budget adopted by the Clayton County Board of Education requires a rate higher than the rollback millage rate, therefore, before the Clayton County Board of Education may set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearing be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.

Concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Clayton County Public Schools Administration Complex, 1058 Fifth Avenue in Jonesboro, on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 6 p.m. and on Monday, July 31, 2017 at 11 a.m. and at 5:30 p.m.
