Georgia Milestone Assessment Rubrics for Language Arts

The Georgia Milestone Assessment for Language Arts has both selected response (multiple choice) and constructed response(written response) test items. The three types of constructed response items are described in the table as well as in the GMAS Study/Resource Guide for Students and Parents. Select the link associated with the grade level of your child to view and use the study guide. Next to each link you will find sample scoring rubrics that outline the skills that students will be expected to demonstrate on the narrative and the opinion/argumentative and informational/explanatory writing tasks.

The 3 Types of Written Responses on the Georgia Milestone Assessments for Language Arts

Type of Written Response Description Required Knowledge and Skills
Constructed Response A constructed-response item asks a question and solicits the student to provide a response he or she constructs on his or her own. The constructed-response items assessments will be worth two points. Partial credit may be awarded.
  • Comprehend shorter writing tasks
  • Produce a brief response that has a clear focus on the question
  • Include explicit evidence from the text with attributionand explanation
Extended Constructed Response An extended constructed-response item is a specific type of constructed-response item that elicits a longer, more detailed response from the student than a two-point constructed-response item does. The student will respond to a narrative prompt based on a passage read. This item will be worth four points. Partial credit may be awarded.
  • Understand the elements (e.g. characters, setting, plot, point of view, theme, etc.) of a narrative (story)
  • Understand how to manipulate these elements in order to produce an original response reflective of the story read
  • Include narrative features and details (e.g. dialogue, sensory details, transitional elements, etc.) that reflect narrative writing
Extended Writing-Response The extended writing-response items, or writing tasks will include two passages, which require students to draw from reading experiences when writing an essay response and to cite evidence from the passage(s) to support claims and conclusions in the essay. The student will compose either an opinion/argumentative or informational/explanatory essay. This item will be worth seven points. Partial credit may be awarded.
  • Understand how to comprehend longer writing tasks with multiple steps
  • Understand how to cite textual evidence from two texts to support a thesis or claim
  • Understand how to expound upon relevant details to strengthen each main point

Constructed Response A constructed-response item asks a question and solicits the student to provide a response he or she constructs on his or her own. The constructed-response items assessments will be worth two points. Partial credit may be awarded.
  • Comprehend shorter real world tasks
  • Produce a brief response that has a clear focus on the question
  • Include explicit mathematical evidence
Extended Constructed Response An extended constructed-response item is a specific type of constructed-response item that elicits a longer, more detailed response from the student than a two-point constructed-response item does. The student will respond to a real-world task. This item will be worth four points. Partial credit may be awarded.
  • Understand the what the question is asking
