Board Recognition
On Monday, November 1, Clayton County Public Schools’ (CCPS) Superintendent/CEO Dr. Morcease J. Beasley joined with the Clayton County Board of Education (CCBOE) in recognizing the students, teachers and administrators for organizing an amazing learning opportunity by permitting our students to participate in the 2021 Annual Legislative Conference held by the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus as high school volunteers. As part of this volunteer opportunity, these students were able to gain first-hand experience and knowledge of the legislative process. Student participants include the following students from Jonesboro High School: Maya Moore, Naysia Barnett, Keirra Hankerson, Eric Smith, Ndey Jagne, Ayana Pugh, Arwynn Presley, Rasaq Olowoeshin, Christopher Dugger, Kevin Castillo, Tyrell Rudd, and Sierra Martin as well as Donovan Slack Jr. from Stilwell School of the Arts! In addition, we commend Mr. Benjamin Straker, CCPS Board of Education Vice-Chair and Representative of District 9, for presenting this opportunity to the district as well as the CCPS Social Studies Department and the teachers (Ms. Porsha McNair, Ms. Daphne Andrews, and Mr. Craig Goolsby) for their support of these outstanding students!
In addition, the Board and Superintendent honored Nevaeh Mair, a freshman at Charles R. Drew High School, as she participated in the swearing-in ceremony for Ms. Joy Tellis Cooper, CCBOE Representative of District 8 on October 4th. Nevaeh Mair came forward and shared a beautiful moment of musical inspiration through song and we thank her for that wonderful contribution to such an important event.
As recognitions continued, bus drivers Ms. Barbara Johnson and Ms. Ruby White were honored in celebration of their years of dedication to safely transporting the students of Clayton County Public Schools. Ruby White was hired in September 1969 with 52 years of service and Barbara Johnson, hired in September 1967 with 54 years of service.
Next the Board and Superintendent commended a collaborative effort involving school and district leadership with partners who are of a national posture. When the US Soccer Federation and the Black Women’s Player Collective came calling, Paul Scott went looking and Dr. Scharbrenia Lockhart played the gracious hostess. The result was the placement of one of 12 mini-pitch facilities in the country at Smith Elementary in hopes of generating a high level of interest in the sport of soccer and in overall fitness and physical well-being. The monetary value of this collaboration, $100,000. We applaud Dr. Lockhart, her team and Mr. Scott for their collaborative leadership efforts in bringing this mini-pitch facility to the Smith Campus and the school district.
The final recognition of the meeting was in acknowledgment of the week of November 8th through 12th as it is home to School Psychology Awareness Week. The week is observed to build connections between students and school communities that enhance students’ skills, improve their outlook, and set them up to thrive in everything they do. The theme for this year is “The Power of Possibility”. The district commends Dr. Sandra Nunez, Deputy Superintendent of Student Support Services, and Ms. Cheri Ann-Taylor, Director of the Department of Student Behavioral Health and Wellbeing, for their work to ensure this important cause is celebrated!
Please join us as we congratulate these individuals on earning these amazing accomplishments and recognitions as well as commend each of them for their excellent representation of Clayton County Public Schools!
