When Clayton Reads, Clayton Succeeds! We are excited to share all of the wonderful ways that students can continue to develop their literacy skills over the summer so that they are ready for next school year.

·        Did you know that a five-year-old who has never read knows about 6,000 words; however, that number increases exponentially when he/she is read to weekly. It increases to over 60,000 words known.

·        Did you know that if that child continues to read for at least 20 minutes a day, he/she will read 1.8 million more words than his/her non-reading peers and perform better on assessments than 90 percent of his/her non-reading peers.

·        Why does it matter? When children are read to early, it stimulates an important part of their brains for processing and developing language. If children continue reading regularly, they will learn more words; the more words they know, the better they understand people and their world; the better they understand people and their world, the better they are able learn in school; the better they learn in school, the smarter they get; the smarter they get, the better they perform, and the better they perform, the better they are prepared for college and/or career or other postsecondary options. And this all starts with regular reading.
