Sancia Berkley
Sancia Berkley

Sancia Berkley was born on the beautiful island of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. After graduating from St. Croix Central High School, she moved to New York and began her career working for the New York State Insurance Department. Not sure which educational path to take, she attended Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), where she earned an Associates in Liberal Arts. Due to unforeseen circumstances, she took an alternative route and was accepted at SUNY Empire State College, where she earned a Bachelors in Business with a minor in accounting. Wanting to do more and make a difference she quit her job after 12 years as an Insurance Examiner to teach middle school mathematics in Bronx, NY.

After teaching for one year in the Bronx, she moved to Georgia in 2001 and began her career as a provisional teacher with Clayton County Public Schools (CCPS) at West Clayton Elementary. In 2003, she was inducted in the first Early Childhood Teacher Academy Of Preparation & Pedagogy (TAPP) offered by CCPS and completed the program in 2005. She then moved on to Harper Elementary, where she was afforded the opportunity to implement the first Science Lab in CCPS. This experience allowed her to collaborate with classroom teachers, but most of all provide students with lab experiences that would help them understand the world around them. She sponsored the first science club: Harper Explorers Science Club, Science Night, and school-wide Science Olympiad. Yes, you can tell she loves science!  She figured out by indulging children in hands-on inquiry, they learned while having fun at the same time. In the summer of 2009 she was afforded the opportunity to participate in the Honeywell Space Camp for Educators and in 2010 she was named Teacher of the Year for Harper Elementary School. She then transferred to River’s Edge Elementary where she taught gifted students and then became a school-based Instructional Coach and then a district Instructional Support Teacher.

Mrs. Berkley  is currently an alumni at Lincoln Memorial College where she earned an Educational Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Throughout her career in CCPS, she has had a myriad of additional opportunities/positions, but her love for children and the impact on student achievement has remained the same. As a Teacher Development Specialist, her goal is support, motivate, and pour into others, just as someone had done with her. During her free time, she enjoys shopping, traveling, and spending time with her family and beautiful dog, Princess.
