Dr. Douglas Hendrix

Dr. Douglas Hendrix was appointed by the Clayton County Board of Education on January 9, 2023, to serve as the Senior Deputy Superintendent – Chief of Staff for Clayton County Public Schools, recommended by Dr. Anthony W. Smith. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Hendrix served as Clayton County Public Schools’ Area Assistant Superintendent for Cluster C, overseeing one-fourth of the district’s K-12 schools and staff (10 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 4 high schools). Dr. Hendrix serves as the Senior Deputy Superintendent - Chief of Staff for the sixth largest school systems in the State of Georgia and one of the 100 largest school districts in the nation. Dr. Hendrix has almost 30 years of experience and notable accomplishments in a variety of leadership roles throughout his tenure in public education.

Dr. Hendrix began his career in public education in 1996 as a middle school Social Studies teacher, serving in that capacity for 3 years. During that time, he was Teacher of the Year, a member of the Georgia Middle School Association’s Middle School Team of the Year, and the runner-up for the Sallie Mae Award given to the district’s best new teacher.  Dr. Hendrix began his career in Clayton County Public Schools in 1999, serving as a sixth grade Science teacher and boys’ basketball coach at Forest Park Middle School. He began his administrative career the following year. Administrative roles Dr. Hendrix has held include assistant principal and principalships at the middle and high school levels, Chief Human Resources Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, Assistant Superintendent, and Director of Human Resources. Additional responsibilities Dr. Hendrix has held included leading the district’s Business and Finance Department (during the Great Recession), the Safety and Security Department, the Professional Development Department, and Legal Services Departments. 

Dr. Hendrix has been deeply committed to Clayton County and Clayton County Public Schools. He was a resident of the community for more than 20 years. Among his colleagues in the school system, Dr. Hendrix is strongly regarded as a deeply dedicated leader who is transformative, innovative, and ethical. He is committed to positively changing the individual lives and family legacies of Clayton County residents by way of improving academic attainment opportunities and outcomes for all students. He serves on the City of Jonesboro, Georgia Initiative for Community Housing Project and is a 2012 Graduate of Leadership Clayton. As Area Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Hendrix was instrumental in establishing International Baccalaureate and Cambridge schools in the district, increasing graduation rates at the high school, and improving academic achievement for all students.

In his nearly 30 years of experience, Dr. Hendrix has received extensive leadership training and won numerous awards. Some of those trainings include the Harvard University Principal’s Center (2007), the Diamond 6 Leadership Workshop (2012), the SUPES Academy (2013), Leadership Development and Executive Coaching from the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (2007), Leadership Boot Camp and Leadership Summit from the American Association of School Personnel Administrators (2007), and school district innovation from the National Institute for School Leadership (2020). Awards include Kelsey Avenue Middle School Teacher of the Year, the Georgia Middle School Association Middle School Team of the Year, Runner-up, Sallie Mae Award, and the Georgia Schools Public Relations Association, Silver and Bronze Merit Award recipient for the television show Hanging with Dr. Hendrix.

Dr. Hendrix holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Fort Valley State University, a Master of Science in Education Leadership, and a Doctoral of Education degree with a concentration in Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. When not working, Dr. Hendrix enjoys reading, writing, music, golfing, and hanging out with his family. Dr. Hendrix is married to Dr. Chato Hendrix, an educator and the Director of Cheerleading for the Atlanta Falcons. They have two wonderful children Dove (9 years-old) and Deuce (7 years-old).
