Clayton County Public Schools Partners with Georgia Power to Bring Learning Power to Local Schools
Clayton County Public Schools (CCPS) has partnered with Georgia Power to bring its signature education program, Learning Power, to local schools to further immerse the district’s students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum, activities and instruction. Established in 2011, Learning Power has engaged more than 500,000 students in 20,000 classrooms statewide while enhancing the STEM classroom experience for students.
According to Georgia Power, the program's lessons are designed to fit within a forty-five-minute class period and provides customized curriculum/materials at no cost to schools with education coordinators. In addition, by presenting STEM-related lessons highlighting energy basics such as simple circuits and energy efficiency, the program helps students understand how energy is made and distributed. Additional lessons offered are centered around simple circuits, careers in energy, invention and innovation, math and lighting technology, and personal economics of energy.

Beasley, CCPS Superintendent of Schools. “We are excited to be moving toward higher levels of performance as our students become immersed in STEM thinking and learning and we are very thankful for the opportunity to partner with an industry leader.”

The program is available to students in Pre-K through high school. According to information provided by Georgia Power, 98 percent of surveyed teachers believed the lessons supports the teaching of the Georgia Standards of Excellence and shared that Learning Power was very effective at educating students about energy efficiency.
“I look forward to working with Dr. Chillis and Clayton County’s Science Coordinator, Janetta Greenwood, to bring the Learning Power program to Clayton County Schools and enhance local schools STEM curriculum,” said Tosha Morell, Energy Efficiency Education Coordinator for Georgia Power. “As I work in classrooms every day, it’s an incredible feeling when students have an “Aha” moment after exploring hands-on STEM activities,” she added.
In addition, Georgia Power will also partner with the Career Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) Department, led by CCPS CTAE Coordinator Dr. Eboni Chillis, on March 17th at STEM Fest 2018 where the community can experience the Learning Power Program. Also, Tosha Morell will offer two free four-day STEM Learning Power Summer Enrichment Camps for Clayton County students in grades 3-5 this June.
