What to expect
Depending upon the need, a BIS job may look different across the District.  However, when dealing with students initially, a BIS may simply observe the child in a classroom setting and watch his or her behavior. The specialist attempt's to get a handle on how often the child misbehaves, and what “antecedent behavior” triggered the misbehavior. The BIS then creates a plan and suggests it to the teacher. The BIS can model the new technique and/or train the teacher in the new strategy. BIS may also run social-emotional behavioral groups that target specific behaviors and/or social skills. BIS will work closely with the school’s PBIS Committee and the Multi-Tier Student Support process by attending meetings , analyzing discipline data reports, and providing recommendations that culminates in the development of intervention plans involving instruction of expected behaviors for identified students. The purpose of the BIS is to address concerns affecting student's school performance and to implement an intervention plan following the Response to Intervention (RTI) model.  The RTI model addresses each Tier of intervention. The goal is to have the student respond to the targeted interventions in place, thus allowing the child to achieve his or her goal.  When the student does not respond to the intervention, other interventions are tried.
