Clayton County Public Schools to Observe National Library Week! National Library Week (April 19-25, 2020) celebrates the contributions of our nation’s libraries and library workers and promotes library use and support. In recognition of our current situation, the American Association of School Libraries changed the theme of National Library Week from “Find your place at the library,” to “Find the library at your place.”

In support of this revised theme, Clayton County Public Schools Media Specialists and Media Paraprofessionals have been working remotely since March 16, 2020, to ensure our students have access to both resources and instruction while learning from home. Media Specialists have provided access to and promoted the use of online libraries and online databases. In addition, Media Specialists have provided both live and recorded instructional videos and story times.

Digital research and reading resources are shared with students throughout the school year. During the past month, Media Specialists have promoted these resources more than ever to ensure our students have continued access from home. A few examples of these resources include:

~Britannica School- an online encyclopedia integrated into the school media catalog allowing students to search a topic to find both books and articles
~Open eBooks - an app providing access to thousands of free eBooks on mobile devices which can be accessed using a code provided by emailing the student name and school to [email protected]
~eRead Kids - provided by the Clayton County Public Library, an eBook library with more than fifteen thousand eBooks accessed using a library card number
~Numerous vendors are providing free access to resources to support students learning from home. These resources include Renaissance’s MyOn eBook library, Epic digital library, Gale databases, Abdo eBook library, and Lightbox interactive eBook library.

More information on any of these resources can be obtained by emailing your school Media Specialist.

CNN recently highlighted digital libraries with specialized collections you can visit to honor the contributions of our nation's libraries and library workers. Included in these selections are:

~New York Public Library’s Digital Collections (digitalcollections.nypl.org) include more than eight hundred thousand items digitized including books, photographs, maps, videos, and more.
~The Digital Public Library of America (dp.la) has more than thirty-seven million books, images, videos, and sounds.

Tuesday, April 21, 2020, is National Library Workers Day. This day is designated for library patrons, colleagues, and administrators to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers including school media specialists and media paraprofessionals. Please help us celebrate National Library Week by using the link below to “Submit a Star” telling others about the work of your school media specialist and media paraprofessional.
